Description The article focuses on the targeted use of annual hemiparasitic plants for restoring species diversity in grasslands and suppressing expansive and invasive plant species. The authors explain the biological principle of hemiparasitism, based on the formation of specialized attachment organs (haustoria) through which these plants obtain water and mineral nutrients from the roots of their host plants. The paper describes the shift in perception of hemiparasites—from undesirable weeds to effective tools for ecological restoration. Particular attention is given to Rhinanthus alectorolophus, Odontites vernus, and Melampyrum arvense, which have been shown to significantly weaken competitively dominant grasses as well as invasive North American species such as goldenrods and asters. The article summarizes practical experience with their cultivation, sowing, seed production, and appropriate management of grassland stands, including mowing and grazing. It also highlights potential risks associated with their use, limitations in seed availability, and options for regulating hemiparasites within vegetation. The text is based on the results of a research project supported by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and is intended for both agricultural practice and nature conservation.
