| Description | The generally known historical image of Chinggis Khan (1162–1227) today is based on the interpretation of key sources from the environment of the Chinggisid dynasty. However, none of these sources close to Chinggis Khan’s time were known or widely available in the Mongolian cultural circle in the period from the collapse of the Great Mongol Empire (14th century) to the beginning of the 20th century. However, the memory of Genghis Khan’s personality and deeds lived a life of its own in the Mongolian environment, and the Chinggis-related narrative tradition in pre-modern Mongolia created a number of distinctive images of Chinggis Khan, which will be presented in this article. |
