| Description | The article summarizes a comprehensive research and conservation and restoration intervention on the ceremonial sword of Jan of Rottal from 1650, which is the oldest surviving sword of a Moravian provincial governor. The sword and its scabbard were examined based on characteristic craft features and modern instrumental methods. The research applied methods such as computed tomography (CT), measurement of the blade’s microhardness using the Vickers test, XRF spectroscopy or analysis of organic materials by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The historical hallmarks on the forged silver mountswere also identified, as well as the overall construction of the sword, including symbolic marks and decoration with gilded black etching on the blade. The mechanical durability and sword quality of the weapon was confirmed. |
