| Description | The presentation outlines an ongoing research project into English Restoration theatre at Masaryk University, of which the presenter is the principal investigator. One of the outcomes of the project will be a thee-volume anthology of Restoration drama in Czech, for which we devised a new collective approach to translation for the theatre, called dramaturgical translation, which is transferrable to any language and national theatre culture. Besides this, the research team has started to form an international community of researchers, which surpasses the traditional the Anglo-centric approach to studying the Restoration period (or any period of English literature and culture for that matter). A logical step forward would be to create a digital database or repository of a kind that would collect the existing body of research, as well as theatre activity, linked with the English Restoration that has been, due to the language barrier, so far inaccessible not only to English-speaking scholars, but also to Continental (and other) historians of literature and theatre. This need has transpired quite recently at the 8th International Conference of Aphra Behn (Europe) Society in July 2024, where scholars and translators from various (chiefly European) countries met and, often for the first time, learned about the reception of, and scholarship on, Restoration theatre in the homelands of their foreign colleagues. The current presentation will explore the possibilities of a digital platform that would open the existing (as well as future) research on the Restoration period, first for the Central European region (Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia), but with a possibility to expand and include other academic and theatre traditions. |
