| Description | How does false information shape epochal moods? This chapter discusses the concepts of mis- and disinformation in the context of an interconnected, hyper-mediated world where online and offline interactions foster uncertainty as well as predominantly negative emotions and moods. The creation and spread of false claims have been damaging to the security of states and societies in areas such as health, physical safety, and political stability. This chapter reveals how mis- and disinformation have shaped the current global mood, through contributing to and sustaining the feelings of anxiety and despair in the increasingly uncertain global and national environments. The chapter traces the interrelationships between misinformation, uncertainty, and emotions, discussing the role that the politics of false claims has played in the age of crisis. |
