Description Unemployment benefits, and particularly their amount, are one of the key provisions of the Employment Act, particularly for job seekers and those whose employment is coming to an end and who have not yet found a new job. In view of the stagnation of the Czech labour market, Czech lawmakers have decided to adopt a flexible amendment to the Labour Code, which aims to stimulate the labour market and make it more flexible. Following the second reading of the flexible amendment to the Labour Code in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, an amendment was submitted which includes, among other things, a change to unemployment benefits. The aim of this amendment is to strengthen social security in order to balance the flexible amendment’s increased flexibility of the Labour Code. The amendment was adopted and will take effect on 1 January 2026. This article aims to present the amendment to unemployment benefits, particularly regarding its objective and the possible consequences it may have. Considering media claims that the flexible amendment to the Labour Code was inspired by Denmark, Germany and Austria, this article also compares unemployment benefits in the Czech Republic with those in these countries.
