| Description | S. pinnata contains a variety of biologically active components, mainly sesquiterpene lactones, some acylated phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, and phytosterols.2 We focused on the separation of the ethyl acetate extract. The extract was subjected to a silica gel column chromatography, yielding 88 fractions. Based on HPLC analysis, they were combined into 26 fractions. Fractions SCH_H_E_32-42, SCH_H_E_43-47 and SCH_H_E_70-71 were selected for further separation using semi-preparative HPLC. This procedure led to the isolation of eight compounds. After evaluating the results by spectroscopic methods and comparing them with the literature, the following substances were identified as pectolinarigenin, hispidulin, and four sesquiterpene lactones – schkuhrin I, schkuhrin II, hiyodorilactone B and 2-dehydroeucannabinolide semiacetal.2 Two additional compounds were identified as novel sesquiterpene lactones,of germacranolide types, heliangolides (compounds 1 and 2) (unpublished data). Isolated sesquiterpene lactones have been subjected to cytotoxicity assays, as well as tests for antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic activity. |
