Description The text examines what research data mean in the humanities and analyses their ontological, epistemological, and practical status in the context of current requirements for data sharing. It first clarifies the concept of data and argues that data are not neutral or “raw” entities, but representations of the phenomena under study that emerge through selective and theoretically informed acts of capturing reality. It then analyses the specific features of humanities data, including their heterogeneity, multimodality, layered meanings, and institutional embeddedness, and describes typical forms of data objects in humanities research. Attention is also paid to different ways of working with data in the humanities and to the relationship between data, interpretation, and argumentation. The concluding section highlights the contribution of the humanities perspective to the understanding of data culture, particularly through critical analysis of the assumptions, values, and societal implications that shape data practices.
