| Description | The aim of the lecture was to present the results of two experimental studies conducted as part of the author’s master’s thesis, focusing on so-called sound-distance and sound-personality symbolism among native speakers of Czech. The objective was to test whether native speakers of Czech, following the pattern observed in native speakers of English, would show a tendency to form iconic associations, first between front (back) vowels and the concept of proximity (distance), and further between the sonorants /l/, /m/, /n/ (voiceless stops /p/, /t/, /k/) and the concepts of Agreeableness and Emotionality (Extraversion). Both hypotheses were supported, and the remainder of the presentation therefore focuses on possible underlying mechanisms and a general discussion. |
