| Description | This book presents the findings of a study examining the formation of early medieval Slavic societies in Central Europe, with a focus on early medieval Moravia. In the second half of the first millennium AD, a profound social transformation took place in the region now known as Moravia. At that time, the region was inhabited by people who were traditionally referred to as Slavs. They first appeared in Central Europe at the end of the Migration Period. It is assumed that the Slavs initially lived in an open society with a lower standard of living (6th–7th centuries). During the 8th century, this society was apparently replaced by a hierarchically structured society with normative regulation under external pressure, in which a new class of nobility began to form. This book aims to present archaeological findings, field data and other empirical material collected in Pohansko near Břeclav and the surrounding area (Břeclav – Lány, Břeclav – Líbivá, Kostice – Zadní hrúd) over the past 30 years, particularly from settlements dating to the 6th–8th centuries (RS1/550–650 AD and RS2/650–800 AD). Based on this data, it is possible to draw some conclusions and interpretations about the social processes that ultimately led to the formation of a new type of early medieval society in the lower Podyjí region of Moravia. |
