| Description | August Prokop (1839–1915) is quite well-known as an architect and the author of the first comprehensive study of art history in Moravia. However, there is a lack of information about his personality, family, social life, and professional career. This study, therefore, seeks to raise the following questions: What networks of social connections did he have? Did he utilise them to secure commissions or advance his career? Did these networks help him cope with the hardships and financial struggles? What relationships did he have with other artists? Aside from partial sources, answers can mainly be found in the exceptional egoistical document written by Prokop – the biography of his wife Adolfine. The article highlights August’s kinship with the architect Albin Theodor Prokop, discusses the nationality issue within the Prokop family, and emphasises Friedrich Schmidt’s role as well as connections with other architects in Prokop’s life. However, it primarily analyses his relationships with other artists, such as the painter Emil Pirchan, and with Brno’s social elite, including the Bochner couple from Stražisko and Friedrich Wannieck. |
