| Description | Russia is among the historically first European countries in which Buddhism took root. The first Tibetan lamas began appearing in its Asian territories around Lake Baikal as early as 1717. With the approval of the tsarist authorities, Buddhism gradually became established also in other, European parts of Russia, including St Petersburg. After the Soviet period of repression, it survived in Buryatia, Kalmykia, and Tuva, where it has experienced a revival since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The lecture will outline both the historical background and the contemporary forms of this religion, which remains somewhat “exotic” within the Russian context. |
