| Description | The lecture series will consist of three parts. The first part will be devoted to the semantics of the concept of the early modern period, and the relationship between this concept and those of the Middle Ages, the modern period, the Renaissance, humanism, and the Reformation. At the same time, it will focus on the geographical principle of cultural transfer in early modern culture (the Mediterranean world vs. the transalpine world), to the study of which some Polish historians have also contributed. In the second part, the lectures will be devoted to the interpretation of the concept of “absolutism” as a specific element of the early modern period. They will focus on clarifying the concept and interpreting the current discussion, as well as on the contemporary philosophical interpretation of absolute power, the constitutional consolidation of the absolute state (and conversely, the failure of its consolidation, as exemplified by Poland), and its interpretation through visual and artistic means of expression. In the final part of the lecture series, selected case studies (“Fallstudien”) will be discussed to help clarify the subject matter through concrete examples, including the roots of early modern principles and absolutism in Central Europe, particularly in relation to the relationship between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. |
