Description M.K. is located in southwestern Moravia, about 30 km southwest of Brno and 30 km northwest of Znojmo, on a promontory in a meander of the Rokytná River. The place name Krumlov is first mentioned in historical records as early as 1277. The epithet “Moravský” was added in the mid-17th century to distinguish it from Bohemian Krumau (Český Krumlov). The term “krumm” (“křivý”) is derived from German and refers to the wide meander of the Rokytná River. According to toponymy, the name M.K. originated from the German phrase “burc uf krumben ouwe,” meaning “castle on the crooked river,” which corresponds to its geographical location.
