| Description | N. is located in the eastern part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, on the right bank of the Oslawa River, about 60 km west of Brno, the capital of Moravia. The town is connected to the left bank of the river by a historic bridge, from where the path rising from the valley led up the hill to a seat of authority, an originally medieval castle that was later converted into a Renaissance palace. According to archaeologists, the region around N. was part of the original Moravian settlement area, with evidence of early settlement dating back to the Paleolithic era. The prehistoric settlement here can be described as continuous; archaeological finds have been preserved from the Neolithic period through to the Slavic settlement of the 5th–7th centuries AD. |
