Complications of Complex Left Branches : The case of Dutch verbal prefixes

| Description | This chapter discusses a derivational issue involving Complex Left Branches (CLBs) in Nanosyntax. As argued by Starke (2018), CLBs are constituents built in a separate workspace which project their last feature when they are merged back into the main derivation. Due to the requirement to project, CLBs sometimes intervene between two features that are contained within a single lexical item, resulting in what is better known as a bracketing paradox (Pesetsky 1979; Newell 2019). Using Dutch deadjectival verbs prefixed by ont- as an empirical case, the chapter assesses a number of possible solutions within the bounds of the current model of lexicalization, and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each solution. By critically engaging with those approaches, the chapter seeks to shed light on the complexities involved in the problem and potentially contribute to ongoing and future discussions on the topic. |
