Description This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of the politics of Brexit, highlighting the intricate challenges it has posed for the European Union (EU). It delves into the EU's strategic response to the United Kingdom's (UK) decision to leave the bloc, paying particular attention to how key political actors and institutional frameworks shaped the negotiations for both the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement. Central to the chapter is the EU's paramount objective of safeguarding its unity throughout the process, ensuring coherence among the EU27 while advancing its core priorities. The chapter also elucidates the tensions that emerged between the actors and how they have influenced the trajectory of mutual relations. Moreover, it explores the post-Brexit governance structures and assesses the ongoing diplomatic and political challenges that continue to shape the mutual UK-EU relationship. The conclusion underscores that, despite recent improvements, the relationship remains inherently fragile, with numerous unresolved issues set to necessitate continued complex negotiations.
