| Description | Noble estates played a unique role in medieval and early modern society. Travelogues from that period indicate that, aside from towns, it was primarily castles and chateaus that immediately caught the attention of travelers. A noble estate was an integral part of the landscape and, at the same time, helped define its character. It served as the center of the noble domain. It therefore served as the fundamental focal point of the region, to which the entire population of the estate—and usually the wider surrounding area as well—looked up. People from the surrounding countryside could watch as noble guests arrived at the manor; their attire and manners conveyed nobility and refinement, and in a sense, they were perceived as living works of art. |
