| Description | This chapter examines the differences between voluntary and involuntary childlessness as perceived by the individuals themselves. It appears that those who are voluntarily childless report relative satisfaction with their lives. On the other hand, since parenthood is a key aspect of identity for many people, those who are involuntarily childless develop a sense that “something is missing” and that their lives are incomplete. This leads to a loss of identity as a significant aspect of involuntary childlessness. This can manifest as reduced self-esteem and feelings of inferiority.
