Who Graded Me? Higher Education Assessment in the Age of AI

| Description | This workshop presents a semester-long experiment on using artificial intelligence for assessing student work in an academic writing course. Students submitted weekly assignments, and each task was randomly assigned to be evaluated either by AI or by human instructors. Two AI systems (ChatGPT and Gemini) and two instructors participated in the assessment process. Students completed questionnaires at the beginning and end of the semester focusing on their experience with AI, trust in AI tools, attitudes toward AI, motivation to use AI and to be assessed by AI, AI-related self-regulated learning, and overall course satisfaction. Throughout the semester, additional short surveys captured students’ motivation and the AI tools they used. After each assignment, students also reported whether they had used AI to complete the task and whether they believed the assignment had been graded by AI. The workshop will introduce the research design, share preliminary findings on student perceptions and behavior, and discuss implications for fair, transparent, and possibly pedagogically meaningful use of AI in assessment. |
