| Description | The article analyses the phenomenon of anti-heroines in contemporary Polish drama, which reflects the social and cultural transformations in post-communist society. The first part presents a characterisation of contemporary Polish drama after 1989, specifically the fundamental themes appearing in dramatic texts, such as national identity, historical memory, ecology, migration, and the role of religion in society. The first part of the article also addresses the formal aspects of the texts – the deconstruction of traditional structures, genre hybridity, and the use of language in dramatic texts. These specific features of dramatic texts have shaped and continue to shape the work of the youngest generation of playwrights. The second part of the article is devoted to the theme of ‘anti-heroism’, with the article first outlining the specific aspects associated with ‘anti-heroism’, and subsequently examining the phenomenon of the ‘anti-heroine’ using the example of two plays: Migrena (2010) by Antonina Grzegorzewska and Schwarzcharakterki (2021) by Martyna Wawrzyniak. A comparison of these two texts allows us to demonstrate how the younger generation of authors perceives the figure of the ‘anti-heroine’ and how these characters relate to broader social issues. The article considers issues of identity, relationships with the surrounding world and gender, which resonate in the analysed works. Migrena and Schwarzcharakterki demonstrate diverse approaches to the construction of female characters who defy traditional models and stereotypes whilst reflecting the evolution of contemporary values and cultural norms. The aim of the article is not only to analyse literary and dramatic elements, but also to highlight the role of women in shaping contemporary art and culture. The works discussed provide inspiration for further research into the portrayal of women on the theatre stage and in dramatic texts, as well as their place in a changing society. The article encourages reflection on the influence of social change on contemporary drama and on the ways in which Polish drama can reflect the complexity of contemporary gender roles and the dynamics of social relations. |
