| Description | This presentation examines selected findings from a multiple case study on language advising practice conducted in an elective course designed to foster both language skills and learner autonomy. Drawing on a qualitative framework that conceptualises autonomy development as a complex dynamic system (Larsen-Freeman, 2009; Tassinari, 2010; Borges, 2022), the research identified several critical moments in students’ interactions with their advisor — moments in which learners’ needs, emotions, and goals became particularly prominent. By analysing these interactions, the study explored how individual students are, or are not, supported during advising sessions, with attention to factors such as advisor’s responsiveness, and the co-construction of learner agency. The presentation will illustrate these critical moments using authentic advising data and discuss what they reveal about the nuanced, relational nature of advising. The session will focus on how these moments can serve as a basis for advisor reflection and professional growth. The aim of the presentation is to show that advising is an art of linking diverse skills, developing a repertoire of strategies, and, most importantly, being sensitive to students’ needs and individual goals. |
