| Description | The study is devoted to the exlibris, which was created for Franz Josef Fidelis Brentano by the Augsburg engraver Jakob Gottlieb Thelot around 1740. It introduces the personality of its customer, a hitherto little-known lawyer in the service of the prince-bishops of Speyer, reveals the circumstances that led to the selection of the pictorial part of this book mark, based on the moralizing Aesop's fable about the bear and the two pilgrims, and concludes that the combination of the pictorial and textual components of the exlibris fulfills the formal characteristics of an emblem as a specific bi-media work. |
