Description Experimental filmmaker Vít Pancíř’s Nic víc (2022) represents a remarkable yet virtually unexamined case in Czech scholarly and journalistic literature of a film adaptation of lyric poetry, specifically of the eponymous poem by František Halas from the collection Ladění (1942). In my presentation, I will offer a comparative interpretation of the poem and the film, focusing in particular on the specific features of Pancíř’s adaptation that derive primarily from the actualization of the poem’s anthropopoetics through cinematic images. Anthropopoetics (a term appropriated from Josef Vojvodík and Jan Wiendl) will be understood as a set of aesthetic-philosophical means through which an author reflectively inquires into the nature of the world they inhabit. It thus concerns what Václav Navrátil, in connection with Halas’s work, describes as the “eternal pursuit of reality,” as well as the conception of the human being as an “unfinished animal” in Friedrich Nietzsche’s thought, according to which human beings do not live within an immutable order of nature but continuously inquire into the order of an open world. Pancíř achieves this actualization through specifically cinematic means of expression, most notably his use of photogénie. As Jean Epstein suggests, photogénie enables cinema to become “the most powerful means of poetry,” since the camera reveals new (visual) qualities of the everyday world, thereby transforming itself into an instrument for its creative reflection.
