| Description | This presentation examines how sound symbolism can be conveyed in translation through two case studies: proper names (particularly those of fictional characters) and poetry. Previous research has shown that the phonetic structure of first names can influence the personality traits associated with them, and that certain phonemes occur more frequently in the names of specific character types. In poetry, sound patterns often contribute to the text's aesthetic and symbolic effects. In both cases, translation choices may preserve, alter, or erase these meanings. The aim of this presentation is therefore to highlight the importance of paying greater attention to sound symbolism in translation studies, where its semantic and stylistic value may be diminished in the process of transferring a text into the target language. |
