| Description | Probably during the 13th century, a text bearing the epithet “pseudo” emerged in European literature; for a long time — a perception that persists to this day in broader literary reception — it overshadowed the original text, namely the Soliloquia of Saint Aurelius Augustinus. These “Pseudosoliloquia” have greatly influenced many significant works of national literatures, including Czech literature, where — as elsewhere — they have established a firm tradition — both in terms of translation and inspiration — leading even to extra-literary consequences (e.g., in the form of spirituality). In this paper, we will attempt to briefly present the aforementioned tradition and its consequences in the Czech context and, selectively, in foreign contexts (e.g., in Polish literature), particularly from the 19th century to the present, since it is precisely through a comparison of these two contexts that we can infer similarities in patterns of reception and publication and, on that basis, clarify previously unexplained phenomena within the domestic tradition, which has not been critically examined to a great extent. Using the pseudo-Augustinian example, we thus intend above all to draw attention to how and for how long a certain error can persist in literary and literary-scholarly consciousness. |
