Description A specific approach in the treatment of oncological patients is influenced by the overall oncological treatment and the diagnosis. Many oncological patients depend on implantable venous ports during the treatment as well as in the follow-up phase. Over 200 implantations with less than 5% of complications are performed yearly at the Department of Surgical Oncology of the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute. Authors present the indications, implantation procedures and nursing issues, with a vision of Portal Centers specialized in the care of patients with implantable venous ports. The basic indication for implantation is requirement of a safe and easy venous access in an oncological patient. Other indications comprise treatment of chronical pain, epilepsy, asthma, long term parenteral nutrition and repeated applications of blood substances in the therapy. Contraindications of implantation include bacteriaemia, sepsis, hypocoagulation, a rare allergy to the port system, and incompatibility of the port system with the therapy planned.
