Description Prof. Kořístek, emeritus head of the 2nd Dept. of Surgery, St. Annes Teaching Hospital, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, is 80 on May 14, 2007. In 1964 he started to work at the 2nd Clinic of Surgery, Faculty Hospital of St. Anna in Brno led by Prof. J. Navrátil. Within 1965 – 1966 he was on a research fellowship concerning vascular surgery and cardiology in Houston. There he met Dr. De Bakey and Dr. Cooley, idols of these medical sciences. After his return from the study stay, he started to devote to cardiology besides vascular surgery. When Prof. Navrátil left for Vienna in 1967, Prof. Kořístek went on to develop vascular surgery, particularly in the fields of peripheral blood-vessels, abdominal aorta, pelvic vascular system and extracranial vessels. Cardiosurgery became more and more interesting for him. Since 1968, besides clinical practice, he was working hard on the problems of experimental surgery focused on the liver transplantation and mechanical heart support in cardiosurgery. On March 1, 1970, he became the Head of the 2nd Clinic of Surgery and that of the 2nd Surgical Department of UJEP. At the age of 43 he was appointed an Associate Professor. He was working steadfastly on the conception of his clinic and its development. In 1972 he put through the extension of the 2nd Clinic of Surgery – the future centre of cardiology. In the course of time it was transformed into the Centre of Cardiovascular and Transplant Surgery. Prof. Jan Černý, a disciple of Prof. Kořístek, became its head. In 1975, after intensive experimental work, Prof. Kořístek published his monography „Experimental Liver Transplantation“ that was the basis for his doctoral dissertation. In 1977 he was appointed a Professor. Prof. Kořístek has been inscribed unforgettably into the history of Czech surgery by the first successful liver transplantation carried out in the former Czechoslovakia. That was realized by his team at the 2nd Clinic of Surgery in Brno on February 2, 1983. At present, the patient with the transplanted liver is in good shape and feels well 24 years after the intervention. Prof. Kořístek has been awarded with a lot of professional and social prizes. In 1991 he left the 2nd Clinic of Surgery and worked in various surgical departments in hospitals of Hustopeče, Boskovice and Polička. Now he is carrying on out-patients surgical practice. He belongs to pioneers of vascular, cardiac and transplantation surgery. Besides the liver transplantation he played an important role in the development of valvular surgery, therapy for ischemic heart disease, myocardial revascularization. In the Czech Republic he was the first one who introduced supporting heart mechanisms into clinical practice. As a teacher, he educated a number of specialists, young physicians were always given possibilities to attend specialized meetings, congresses, and to meet outstanding personalities of the Czech surgical school. He evaluated his fellow-workers according to their abilities and their work done. Therefore, our thanks justly belong to him for his lifelong work and generous attitudes to his staff. His current and lasting vitality presented by his work must be really admired. We beg to wish him good health and well-being.
