| Description | The genus Alopecurus is represented in the Czech flora by 3 native species, i.e. A. aequalis, A. geniculatus, and A. pratensis, the hybrid of the latter two, and by the adventive A. myosuroides. They can be distinguished by a combination of qualitative and quantitative characters, including spikelet, anther and awn length, as well as inflorescence width and anther colour. We revised and recorded 1661 herbarium specimens of A. aequalis and 811 specimens of A. geniculatus from 30 Czech herbaria. Distribution maps based on these data, field records and records from the Czech National Phytosociological Database have shown that both species have a similar distribution pattern in Czechia, but A. geniculatus is much less frequent than A. aequalis. Alopecurus geniculatus is rarer in higher altitudes than A. aequalis, probably because it is less tolerant to frost. The temporal distribution of herbarium specimens has shown that A. aequalis is probably spreading while A. geniculatus is declining. |
