Description The paper is focused on the specifics of place boundaries from the urban sonic environment perspective. Due to different phenomenology of vision and hearing, these sonic boundaries differ in their nature from visually perceived boundaries - they are more mingeling and connecting than dividing and demarcating in nature. A city is characterized by high density of acoustically contrasting places and therefore, the problem of mutual penetration of their soundscapes is an important matter both from the viewpoint of place and its identity and from the viewpoint of individual experience. The paper first outlines phenomenological differences between vision and hearing. Then a descriptive model of soundscape (sonic environment of a place) is introduced, consisting of four components: dominant sound, foreground, horizon and space. This model is subsequently used for an analysis of the sonic boundary phenomenon, its possible forms, connections and hypothetical consequences.
