Description The article deals with the concept of "moravština" (Moravian language). The expression is often used (and abused) by non-linguists. In the scholarly context, this concept differs depending on whether it is used in the field of history, linguistics or sociolinguistics. Views of this kind are necessarily partial and influenced by the period in which they originated as well as by the method used. The article also provides a survey of features typical of language used on the Moravian territory, taking into consideration also the differentiation among individual regions - which cannot possibly lead to a “general Moravian language”. Paradoxically in the contemporary period, when culture is linked with economics, and local dialects thus become less conspicuous, local patriotism in Moravia is growing. This phenomenon manifests itself by writing texts intentionally using dialects as well as by origin of dictionaries created by non-professionals and stressing differences of Moravia from the region of Bohemia. The language thus becomes the tool of identification of individuals with a community to which they are linked emotionally, not materially, language is perceived, rather than used.
