Description Diet education of children and youth constitutes an essential element of actions within health promotion of the society. While carrying out this process at schools, one should take into consideration its various conditionings: social, family, environmental, economic or cultural. The research analyses the problem of dietary preferences of retirement age women in the context of family health building. The analysis focuses on the following issues: a structure of selected products consumption by elderly women against contemporary assumptions of the so-called Golden Card of Nutrition, the role of family dietary tradition, the influence of other family members on the investigated womens current feeding methods, and participation of the questioned people in the eating habits of their families. The questionnaire was carried out on 162 women age 60-86. The data were collected in the Wielkopolska region, between April and June 2008. The results were calculated on the basis of the statistical analysis. As the research and analysis show, eating habits of retirement age women differ considerably from the Golden Card of Nutrition. This situation is particularly alarming in the context of shaping diet behaviour of children and youth. Elderly people have a significant influence on the health behaviour of the younger generation, through the process of socialization and inter-generation transmission. Therefore, diet education should be multi-directional and include all age groups, so that the knowledge of rules of proper nutrition is more coherent and reliable for children and youth.
