| Description | This text was inspired by discussions about adequate concepts for studying forms of religiosity not connected to any particular religious organization or tradition (called "detraditionalized spirituality" in this study). The study presents and critically reflects concepts that are widely used in this field of research; especially the terms "New Age", "the New Age movement" and "spirituality". It points out several problematic features of these terms: the notion of a dichotomy "religion versus spirituality", presuppositions about a particular "content" (i.e. a list of specific beliefs and practices) of detraditionalized spirituality, and the effort to depict these cultural/religious forms as one social or religious movement. In the second part of this contribution, more specific approaches to detraditionalized spirituality that are able to cope with the limitations outlined above are discussed. |
