Description This article compares values and attitudes of individuals in two most common forms of partnership - marriage and cohabitation. First, it ascertains if different value profiles indeed exist. Second, it confirms that these do not merely reflect the different composition of these forms of partnership in terms of education, age, and number of children of married/cohabiting individuals. Finally, it examines whether a convergence in values and attitudes has been taking place recently. The analysis utilizes Czech data from the three waves of the European Value Study, which took place in the Czech Republic in 1991, 1999, and 2008. It turns out that differences exist, do not converge in time, and are not explained by compositional effects. This might suggest that these differences are not merely resulting from self-selection of different individuals into cohabitation as compared to marriage.
