Description | Current geriatric medicine strives for the longest maintaining adequate physical and mental activity, prevent the loss of self-sufficiency and improve the prognosis of elderly in case of illness. It therefore has a preventive and interventional supports successful healthy aging. The current demographic situation predetermines the current global trend of an increase in absolute and relative number of seniors. This is most noticeable in those very old and very demanding dysaptibilních requiring professional care. Demographically, the population is aging due to changes in mortality and declining fertility - born with fewer children and more people live to an old age. A crucial role is played by a better standard of living than in the past, and the progress of medicine. At the beginning of the 20th century were people older than 65 years in the European industrialized countries 3-5%. Today, the number is in these countries in the range 13.2 to 18%. Life expectancy at birth compared to the beginning of this century, almost doubled. |
