Description Introduction: The use of a surgical mesh in the inquinal and ventral hernia repair recently considered a gold standart by most authors. The most frequently used material- polypropylene- has originally been considered biologically inert, the recent literature however shows a lot of complications in realtion with the use of this material. In our study we have compared different types of polypropylen meshes in an animal model. Study goal: To find out the amount of shrinkage and firmness of a mesh in time in relation to the mesh pore size. Methods: The animals divided into 3 groups, in every group another mesh applied onto the abdominal fascia. Within time period the mesh with ventral abdominal wall removed after the animal authanasia. The elasticity and shrnikage has been evaluated. Results: All messhes showed some shrinkage, the smallest one was in the group with extra large pores size mesh, the elasticity of the ventral abdominal wall also copied the mesh with extra large pores. Conclusion: The study shows the necessity to distinguish between different types of meshes in the hernia repair surgery, because the shape and elasticity of the given material are not constant in time and they can be the reason of an eventual recidive.
