Description This article deals with the definition and the concept of separable prefix in the New Grammar of the Spanish Language (NGRAE 2009). Our main conclusions are: 1) There is no clearly defined inventory of Spanish separable prefixes with specific grammatical properties. 2) The orthographic separation of the prefix, at least according to the Orthography of the Spanish Language (2010), is given by the nature of the base to which the affix is attached, and not by the grammatical characteristics of the latter. 3) The formal autonomy of some prefixes in Spanish is purely a matter of orthographic convention. The best example of this is the evolution of the attachment of the prefix ex- to nominal bases in the last two decades (exalumno/ex-alumno - ex alumno - exalumno).
