Description The article gives a short overview of current clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge of Legionnaires disease and about the possible risk exposures and methods of prevention. National Legionella Reference Laboratory in Czech Republic in 1998-2008 was found a high percentage of hotels, spa hotels, hospitals, and cooling towers colonized with Legionella (60-89%). The numbers of reported cases of legionelosis in the same period have consistently an increasing trend with a peak in 2008 (n = 15). In 2011, the number of notified cases have four times (n = 58). In the years 2000-2010 was 14% of legionelosis reported in association with travel, while 9% in healthcare facilities and 3% in occupation connection. The origin of the other 74% of the disease has not been explained. It was a sporadic cases of disease, community or industrial clusters or outbreaks have been detected yet in the Czech Republic. An increasing number of people with risk factors and increasing exposure to Legionella in the living, medical facilities, sports and shopping centers or in occupational connection.
