What about compulsory and optional subjects?

Subjects are divided into the categories of compulsory, compulsory elective and elective. The composition of these subjects is specific for each programme.

Compulsory courses

Compulsory courses are those whose completion is mandatory for the study in question.

Compulsory electives

Compulsory electives are those that are part of a compulsory block. This means that you have to take either a certain number of courses from a certain range of these courses or courses for a certain total number of credits. Compulsory electives include courses on a common university basis.

Elective subjects

Elective subjects are those that are optional in relation to a specific course of study.

How do I find out which subjects are compulsory or optional for me?

This information can be found in the Course catalog for your Study plan. You will also find a recommendation in which semester you should enrol in the courses, the so-called recommended course of study. If you are studying Combined studies, you need to follow the Course catalogues for both your major and minor.

You can find out which courses are compulsory and optional for your programme in the IS in the Student section. You can view your templates here either in the Start of Study tab under Registration and Enrolment when adding a new course or in the During Study tab under My Study Check.
