Department of Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archive Studies

About us

The Brno Student Section is one of the sections of the Czech Archival Society (ČAS), which brings together archivists, university lecturers, and students of archival studies and auxiliary historical sciences, as well as other supporters from the professional and general public. The main task of ČAS is to support the professional activities and interests of archivists in the Czech Republic, including their employment in archives.

The Brno Student Section of the Czech Archival Society (BSS ČAS) is one of five student sections that aim to fulfil the goals of ČAS. It brings together mainly students of archival studies and auxiliary historical sciences, but also other supporters of our activities at Masaryk University.

The student "branch" of the ČAS was established in 1992 on the initiative of students of the study programs Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archival Studies. It was then reestablished in 2002 and is still active to this day.

What is our mission?

Our task is to bring together and support students of archival studies and auxiliary historical sciences, but we also welcome supporters from other fields at Masaryk University. We aim to educate and promote archives, archival science, and auxiliary historical sciences, but also to activate students and create contacts and relationships within our field and beyond.

What we are doing

The Brno Student Section organizes various lectures on topics related to archival science and auxiliary historical sciences, professional excursions at home and abroad, social events, and meetings, about which it informs its members and tries to involve them in the organization or presentation.

Palaeographic Club or Student Reading of Archival Sources

Since 2022, we have been organizing informal student meetings focused on reading handwritten sources together.

If you want to practice reading historical sources but can't bring yourself to do it at home, the Palaeographic Club is the ideal place for you. We read everything from the Middle Ages to modern times, and if you have a tip for an interesting text (e.g., a text you need to work with for your thesis), we can read that too. We check each other's reading, correct each other, and help each other to make reading enjoyable and enriching for everyone. You can come and try it out once, or even every week. The club is open to students of all fields and levels of study.

We meet once a week during the spring and autumn semesters. You can find the latest information on our Facebook page.
