Mixed-Methods Research (MMR)in Applied Linguistics

25. 4. dr. Jinjin Lu:
Mixed-Methods Research (MMR)in Applied Linguistics

Quantitative and qualitative research methods can
be used separately in different stages in a study.
Using both quantitative and qualitative methods in
a research are very important and helpful. Traditionally,
researchers believe that research studies are
either quantitative or qualitative, however, there are
increases in methodological work undertaken by
a mixed method research paradigm in recent years.
Now, mixed methods research is seen as the third
research paradigm that can help bridge the schism
between the qualitative and quantitative research.
In this workshop, first we use examples to show
how to use mixed methods in language teaching
and learning projects. Second, we discuss trends in
MMR in language teaching and learning, and review
recent published papers in high impact academic
journals related to this field, coving one decade
from 2008-2018. Meanwhile, issues and challenges
of MMR are discussed. Finally, we conclude by presenting
prospects and developments of MMR.
