Medical Faculty of Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, invites excellent scientists to apply for

Postdoc position in Bioinformatics in Stem Cell Neurobiology

Description:

The Department of Histology and Embryology is an educational and research workplace at the Medical Faculty of Masaryk University, Brno, the Czech Republic. The Department provides courses on all aspects of normal structure and development of human tissues and organs to students of General medicine and Dentistry. The Department is recognized as premier place in the country for research mainly focusing on human pluripotent stem cells, their biology, and applications in biomedicine.

  • Dr. Bohačiaková reserch Neurobiology group uses cellular models (human induced pluripotent stem cells) to study Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis in vitro. Our in vitro models include a large portfolio of neuronal cell systems, including 2D neurons and 3D cerebral organoids. We aim to study, and ultimately to understand, the mechanisms of AD initiation and potential treatment for AD;
  • we focus on mechanisms of neuronal differentiation, cellular senescence, metabolism, endosomal trafficking, and pathogen infections and how these processes influence the pathobiology of AD;
  • our research is hypothesis-driven, and we seek to complement our analytical tools with high-throughput bulk-mRNA/miRNA seq analyses as well as single-cell seq transcriptomics to fully exploit the potential of our unique model systems;
  • as a part of the job, we offer participation in the relevant Bioinformatics training at EMBL-EBI or similar;
  • we collaborate with numerous Czech and International Laboratories, including Max Planck Institute, Germany; Aarhus University, Denmark; Amsterdam UMC, The Netherlands, and others;
  • our team currently consists of 5 Post-doctoral researchers, 2 Research Scientists, 2 Ph.D. students, and 2 undergrad students, who are all proficient in their fields of expertise.

The successful candidate should:

  • be a researcher who has received a PhD or its equivalent within the last 7 years;
  • be a researcher who has worked at least 2 whole years in the last 3 years outside the territory of the Czech Republic in the field of research with a working time of at least 0.5 full-time equivalent, or who has been PhD student (or equivalent) abroad;
  • have a publishing record – in the last 3 years at least 3 publication outputs ("articles") above the field median (at least 2 of them in Q1) registered in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science.

Specific criteria for this position:

  • a scientific degree in computational biology or bioinformatics, or related fields;
  • strong interest in single-cell omics. Experience in applied NGS data analysis such as transcriptomics (RNA-seq, scRNA-seq), additional experience with other omics methods is a plus;
  • demonstrable experience in programming languages required for data analysis (R and/or Python);
  • proficiency with Linux/Unix; bash scripts;
  • experience in building and maintaining bioinformatics tools/pipelines is a plus;
  • ability to propose innovative solutions and critically evaluate data;
  • excellent communication skills and teamwork.

The applicant shall submit:

  • a CV including a list of publication activity;
  • a motivation letter, including an outline of the previous research themes of the candidate;
  • contact information of at least two references (name, position, telephone number);
  • a diploma (recognition for diplomas from foreign institutions);
  • documents proving the candidate has worked at least 2 whole years in the last 3 years outside the Czech Republic and/or PhD diploma from a foreign institution.

MU offers the opportunity to get:

  • an interesting job in a dynamically-expanding university area;
  • diverse and challenging work in an excellent research environment;
  • initial appointment for 2 years;
