Measuring multicultural effectiveness of Slovak and Czech students with the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire

Popis The study investigates the link between international experience (IE), gender, home culture, age, and multicultural effectiveness, as measured by the Czech and Slovak versions of the Multicultural Personality Questionnaire, in 301 university students and graduates, aged 19-31. We expected: International experience to be linked to increased multicultural effectiveness; Slovak or Czech background not to discriminate significantly between the groups; and inherent acculturation experience to differentiate Slovak students at Czech universities from others. Results indicate that participants with IE scored higher on Openmindedness and Social Initiative, with the length of IE exerting influence on both dimensions. Cultural Empathy was associated significantly with IE only in combination with gender (females scoring higher than males). Gender proved to be a much better predictor than IE for Emotional Stability (males scoring higher than females). Slovaks studying in the Czech Republic were found no different from others on the level of multicultural effectiveness. Home culture and age showed to have a minor or no influence. These findings confirm that experiencing an exposure to a cross-cultural contact elicits personality changes that enhance effectiveness of individuals in multicultural contexts. Additional psychometric testing of the MPQ is advised. Further studies should also focus on testing contribution of other variables to multicultural effectiveness.
