Popis What are the connotations of the term 'Balkans' in modern Greek culture? What is the imaginary relationship between Greece and the Balkans? How close or far from the West are the Balkans and Greece? Examining material from the Modern Greek literary production, but also from other literary genres from the early 19th century to the first decade of the 21st century, this study attempts to answer, among other things, the above questions. This book aspires to highlight the alterations of the modern Greek discourse on the Balkans, as well as the historical and political conditions that gave birth to, shaped and consolidated these discourses. At the same time, the study explores the dominant ideologies in the modern Greek imaginary (on a cultural, political, social and even economic level), through which a distinctive self-image was gradually formed: the hierarchy of the Greek space as superior to the Balkans, but also as being closer to the West. By examining the literary production that is inscribed in critical phases of contemporary modern Greek and, more broadly, Balkan history - such as the Ottoman collapse, the establishment of Balkan socialism, and the fluid post-communist reality - the study attempts to identify aspects of the imaginative perception of the Balkan space in modern Greek thought.
