Popis | The presentation aims to illustrate and analyze the linguistic features of Yuri Andrukhovych’s authorial style in means of expressing emotional states and subjective attitudes - in selected stories from his novel The Lexicon of Intimate Cities. There are analyzed the linguistic and stylistic characteristics of the following stories: Berlin 1993–2009, Brussels 2000, Warsaw 1989 and later, Kyiv 1972–2017, Lausanne 2000, 2005, and Pittsburgh 2001. These stories are rich in semantic contrasts typical of Andrukhovych’s style, as well as in his unique metaphors. In particular, antonymic and paronymic contrasts are employed to convey emotional intensity, as well as the emotional and sensual states and subjective attitudes of the characters—among whom the author himself is always present. Special attention is given to the author’s original metaphors. Examples of expressive means used to reflect emotional states and subjective attitudes include metaphorical or emotionally charged phrases such as "aggressive vigilance", "drunk on the Bernese air of freedom", "pleasure bordering on sadistic", "the air was becoming filled with destruction and scuffle", "a look gently piercing with its sting", "to choke with gratitude". The linguistic and stylistic analysis is preceded by an informative introduction about the author and the uniqueness of this novel within the context of contemporary Ukrainian literature, which may be of interest to an international audience. |
