Popis The history of mathematics is a dynamic field that emerged alongside professionalization of mathematics in the nineteenth century. Mathematicians themselves were the first to write this history, highlighting the lives of famous mathematicians like Pythagoras and Thales to establish the antiquity of their discipline and to provide role models for future mathematicians. Here we examine the lives and elevation to the status of Mathematical Icons of three mathematicians from different countries and periods: Aryabha?a in India, Bernard Bolzano in the Czech lands, and Mihailo Petrović in Ser- bia. Despite their differences and contexts, these mathematicians share commonalities in their journeys in becoming icons within their respective nations. The chapter not only serves as a historical analysis, but also offers insights for educators, as their stories can be used in classrooms to inspire students and showcase the diverse paths to their mathematical ‘greatness’.
