Dispreferences in Psychotherapy

| Popis | The primary aim of this mixed-method study is to explore what kinds of dispreferences regarding psychotherapy people report. Existing data from an online survey will be used for the analyses. The data set contains an N=2219 responses (including responses with missing data). Four coders will be involved in the primary qualitative thematic analysis, coding the open-ended responses to the following question: “What would you most dislike or despise happening in your psychotherapy or counselling?” Building on the findings of this primary analysis, there is also a secondary aim: to look at differences in prevalence across a range of demographic characteristics (eg. whether the frequency of reported categories of dispreferences is related to having / not having any psychotherapy experience as a client). Since the primary qualitative aim provides a basis for the secondary quantitative aims, the design of this mixed-method study can be best framed as an exploratory sequential design. Categories of dispreferences and their frequencies of occurrence in the sample will be reported. Implications of the findings for research practice will be discussed. |
