| Popis | By constantly portraying unrealistically attractive appearances, media exert adverse effects on the self-objectification of young women. Self-objectification is defined as seeing oneself as an object and being preoccupied with appearance and has negative consequences, such as a negative body image. Hence, it is crucial to understand how media, particularly visual social media platforms, affect self-objectification. Even though it has been researched for almost 30 years, there is still no valid and reliable measurement for the state form of self-objectification. Due to this, a new scale has been developed. Two dimensions (preoccupation with appearance and adopting an objectifying perspective) were formulated based on the Objectification theory. Two data collections were conducted to test the scale's validity. First, qualitative interviews with 10 women (aged 18-29) focused on verifying content validity via expected response processes. Second, the quantitative part (N = 500 women aged 18-29) tested the factor structure and concurrent validity (using trait self-objectification and state body image). The result concerning the validity of the scale will be presented at the conference. The newly developed, theory-based scale allows for valid conclusions about media effects in future research, particularly within experimental designs. Thanks to that, the scale contributes to advancing the understanding of how self-objectification forms in the context of media use. |
