| Popis | Puns, as a form of lexical ambiguity, engage complex cognitive mechanisms during the processing stage, providing a rich material base for psycholinguistic exploration. Despite their widespread use, little empirical research has examined how readers resolve the incongruity generated by puns, particularly in German, where an apparent research gap exists. This study seeks to bridge this gap by employing eye-tracking methodology to investigate the real-time resolution of homophone and homonym puns in German. Through an experimental design comprising three conditions – homophone/homonym puns, error sentences, and contextually coherent control sentences – this research probes the cognitive stages involved in pun comprehension. Preliminary results indicate that homophone puns are processed more swiftly than homonym puns, with error sentences requiring the most cognitive resources. Additionally, the study demonstrates that contextual cues play a crucial role in facilitating the resolution process, with smoother and more efficient processing occurring when context supports the intended interpretation. This research offers empirical evidence that advances theoretical models of humor processing and lexical ambiguity resolution. The implications extend beyond linguistics, contributing to fields such as natural language processing, cognitive psychology, and applied linguistics, with potential applications in humor-based communication and educational contexts. |
