| Popis | This workshop is dedicated to dissecting the various ‘groupisms’ that have characterised political thought, social interactions, and cultural practices in Central Europe in modernity; the identity politics these conceptions of groups have engendered and through which they have been mobilised; and the statisms such groupisms and identity politics have given rise to and sought to legitimise. This groupist dynamic has perhaps been captured most accurately by Ernest Gellner’s (1984) seminal definition of nationalism as the attempt to “make culture and polity congruent”: in a context where each self-defining ‘unit’ lays claim to its own clearly demarcated space, exclusions and border conflicts necessarily follow. |
